BURDEKIN RALLY - NORTH QUEENSLAND

The Burdekin district is the sugar capital of Australia, with about 80,000 hectares of land under sugar cane and an annual production of about 1.25 million tonnes of raw sugar. The district also contributes one-third of the nation's mango harvest and is a major producer of melons and a host of other fruit and vegetables.

A number of our local members hosted a wonderful rally, based around Ayr and Home Hill and drawing  cars and crews from all over the state.    Where is the Burdekin?

The images on this page were contributed by Rhonda Guthrie.
AND A FEW HISTORICAL IMAGES...

Where there's sugar cane there's rain and generally a railway!  Floods were and remain a part of life in the tropical north.
